Chamku: Movie Review

As boring as its name is.

Would any boy ,at the age of 8, survive if he is hit by a gun on chest? Yes, if his offscreen surname is Deol. Chamku lives with his father peacefully in the village, until once Thakur (Akhilendra Mishra) kills his father and half kills him. Saved by a Naxalite group, Chamku is now also a Naxalite. Leaded by Danny Dengzoppa, he is one of the core in the Naxalite group.
Now would he survive, if he is hit 3-4 bullets by police officers in an encounter? Offcourse, he does. No body else in the group survives. Again the same reason - no body is Deol in the group - except him, so now accept him. A special task officer (Irrfan Khan) offers him to join the special task force and be sharp shooter for the nation. With no other choice in the hand, Chamku agrees.
He then sadistically kills the terrorists, sadistically sleeps on the floor, sadistically wears black shirt in the whole movie, sadistically make friends with another STF sharp shooter (Ritesh Deshmukh), sadistically falls in love with a school teacher (Piggy Chops) and gets sadistically killed (offcourse half killed, not dead... Deols are never dead) several a times by cops, terrorists, again Thakur etc. Ritesh Deshmukh is killed by the STF officers itself as he wants to leave and is dead due to its offscreen surname. Chamku wants to leave, but cant leave. He is the best sharp shooter and applies again for the permanent leave, and is senctioned officially but STF officers had different plans. He then kills Thakur, STF officers, other 20-30 gundas and gets leave however.
Bored by reading the story? Think how we would have been bored watching the full movie, wanting temperory leave from the movie.
In the whole theater, we were only 8 persons suffering from Chamku. You must be thinking, why? Were others enjoying? No, there were we 8 only in the theater, who were watching. And, Laxmi Theater, Mandvi has to close the movie shows in 2 days only, and has to release a B grade Hollywood Movie instead of Chamku.
In the beginning of the movie, we enjoyed the excellent camera work and good cinematography, but within an hour, due to lukewarm storyline, it vanished too.
In Mtv Ticker, this was the cool line in fond memory of Chamku: "Abhay Deol wants to change his surname, after watching Chamku." We are glad, ours is not.

Review : A WEDNESDAY

By Ace Ventura.....Brijesh Raychanda

Director, Story, Screenplay: Neeraj Pandey

Cast
: Anupam kher , Naseeruddin shah , Jimmy Shergill , Amir Bashir , Deepal Shaw

Duration: 2:0 hrs (approx)

This is a complete surprise that newer stories are slowly finding their way. Two Fridays ago, Phoonk spoke about the power of Black Magic and last Friday, ROCK ON!! encouraged you to chase your dreams. These three movies havent any Biggi cast but yet they are big hits.

A Wednesday movie is at best in the story. And one thing i want to tell that its not movie like MUMBAI MERI JAAN or any other terror based movie. Its a very different kind of movie.

Now about storyline, A faceless, nameless man (Naseeruddin Shah) grips the city with his super mobile operated bombs. He wants four arrested terrorists for the city to be saved from a Big Blast. Mumbai police commisioner Rathod (Anupam Kher) and his team of two best cops like Arif Khan (Jimmy Sheirgill) and Jai Pratap (Aamir Bashir) try to find out the person who is related to all these plans.

Naseerudin Shah & Anupam Kher are at their best performance. After many movies both are given chance for this kind of performance. Both Excells in their roles.

Jimmy shergil has also given his one of the best performance in his career. He is perfect as a cop in the movie. He is improvising himself from movie by movie and prooving that he is one of the best actors Bollywood have.

Amir Bashir is brilliant. Deepal Shaw has done justice to her character.

Overall we can say that movie is at its best. Director has done hardwork on it. A simple story but represented very much effectively. Mainly Director has concentrated on the story n Cast. And he has prooved that he has done good job.
Finally, in Taran Adarsh's words: Give a favour to yourself : Watch a Wednesday.

My rating 4 dis movie is : **** (Movie at its best)

Review : ROCK ON !!

By Ace Ventura....Brijesh Raychanda
Cast: Farhan Akhtar, Prachi Desai, Arjun Rampal, Purab Kohli, Luke Kenny and Shahana Goswami, Koel Puri
Director: Abhishek Kapoor
Music : Shankar-Eshan-Loy
Lyrics: Javed Akhtar
Duration : 2.25 hrs (appro.)
It’s always been said that sometimes in somewhat situations v have 2 make compromises for life or for someones. Sometimes these compromises make future enjoyable and sometimes after compromises life becomes only COMPROMISE. The film, Rock On goes on that basic thought only.
Rock on is movie rolling around 4 Frnz, namely Aditya (Farhan), Joe (Arjun), KD (Purab Kohli) and Rob (Luke Kenny) having same passion MUSIC , fight hard together 2 take their band Magik’ to the position of number one . They get d opportunity 2 participat in a competition of Channel V and they won. The music channel also provides a chance of recording of their first album.
But Here the movie becomes diffrent. Here, They have to make compromise few things and the situation takes Joe away from Aditya. Magik gets closed n all frnz split out. Aditya leaves all his friends and turns into a businessman leaving with his wife Shakshi (Prachi Desai)while on the other hand, Joe leaves his wife Debby (Shahana Goswami) keeps himself happy with his guitar teaching his son lesson @ music.Purab settle hislife in some Bla-Bla jewellers n Rob still giving music in ads n work with Anu malik (Dnt get panic..he got very small role).
Story rolls for ten years. One day Aditya’s wife Shakshi comes to know about Aditya’s band Magik and to make Aditya happy, she arranges a reunion party for all his friends on his birthday who were involved in the band. And the reunion gives a rebirth to the band also. They all fight for another chance at the Channel V stage.
Farhan is his best. He has prooved dat he is not only gd director but gd singer(he has sung 4 songs) n actor also. he plays his role perfectly.

Arjun Rampal is at his best performance ever. But sometimes he looks unfare with music. But overall he is best. He has given perfact satisfaction while d ending comes. Purab takes his role very cutely and with some good comments. He is in improvement one after another his movies. And Luke also plays his role with his cool acting.

Music Directors SEL is at his utmost level. They are very much dependable for this type of movies. Music of them takes movie at top level. Lyrics of Javed Akhtar is as always - cool.

Director Abhishek Kapoor has done his work very precisely and viewers can notice lots of hardwork from each frame. He wanted a person who sings the songs in movie as well as in real so it looks perfect. Thus, he catched Farhan. He trained all the actors noticing best musicians so they can look very familiar with their characters.

The movie is @ 2 take second chance bcoz in life everybody cant get second chance. Its like Abbhishek Kapoor, who has taken chance and created the movie at perfect point. His first movie ARYAN was also same type movie. Bollywood really needs these type of movies, directors, concepts and all of these.

Some people says dat ROCK ON !! is just like DCH part 2 n some says its based on some English movie. But frm ma point of view Director, Cast n mainly Music Directors SEL stands positive in dis movie. And they only deserves a standing ovation.

My rating 4 dis movie is : **** (Dont miss at all)

Review: Mixed Doubles

By BT Kida... Hardik Raychanda
Watch it.

I know its not a new release. But as I promised you, I will give you the review of whatever film I watch.

It was showcased (free of charge, offcourse) yesterday on Tata Sky, and I gained the opportunity to watch this missed movie of mine, which i was unable to watch anywhere. In a small town like Mandvi it is difficult to get DVD of such movie.

Sunil Arora (Ranveer Sauri) and Malti (Konkana Sen Sharma) are happily married couple since 10 years and still loves each other a lot. There is only a problem, the frequency of physical love is now been reduced to 40 days from 3 times a day. (law of diminishing marginal utility, you know.. as per explained by Vinay Pathak and Saurabh Shukla)

From an NRI friend of Sunil, he gets to know that in USA, there are some swinging club, where the wife swapping is done so easily. The friend makes him jealous by narrating how he and his wife enjoy the swingings.

Sunil finds the way to enjoy life and explains his plans to his wife, who immideately refuses. Somehow, he makes his wife agree by emotional black mailing, though. Meanwhile, he starts finding such pair who will agree swinging. He then, meets Vinod (Rajat Kapoor) and Kalpana (Koel Puri). And then..

The usp of the movie, is Ranveer Sauri's acting. Especially when he is nervous and anxious about the thing. The scenes where Ranveer meets some people for swinging proposals, are hilarious.
I cant stop my self mentioning here one of it:
A bearded man is interviewing Ranveer, if he is suited for the swapping or not...
Ranveer: "hi, i am Sapan Joshi".
bearded man: "thik hai, to aap ye paheli baar kar rahe hai"
Ranveer: "um.. haan, yes.. its my first time, its maalti's idea actually"
man: "achchha, aap fruit khana pasand karte hai?"
Ranveer: "um... haan"
man: "Kaun sa?.."
Ranveer, too honestly: "Angoor, Strawberry, Apple, Aam"
man, too seriously: "achha, aam khate hai..kaun sa?"
Ranveer, a lil bit frusteted by honestly, "langda....., totapuri...., aafoos"
man: "aafoos, achha. Chhil ke yaa Kaat ke?"
Ranveer: "Chhil ke..!!!???!!!"
man: "are yaar, sorry boss, apni nahi jamegi" and walks away...
Ranveer: "are thahero yaar... chhil ke bhi khaa lenge.. hello..."
one more:

Ranveer to an older man: "aap joraavar sinh hain?..."
Older man: "aapko kya lagta hai? main joraavar hun...? achha aap ek kaam kijiye, aap sochiye main joraavar hu ke nahi hu.... tab tak main joraavar sinh ko bulaake laata hu...."
how are these???? for more like this, one should surely watch it.
Anurag Kashyap's dialogues are fantastic. Once again a fear, came to my mind, that if we dont start acclaiming his genious works, he can loose his creativity. Rajat Kapoor has produced it and directed it, the direction and his acting is very well. Though, the end is good but is a lil bit abrupt and unexpected.

Review: Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na

By BT Kida..... Hardik Raychanda

You Still Young??? Go Grab it Quickly...

I watched Jaane Tu... last week, this week and will watch it tomorrow too.. No, its not any great movie that one should watch thrice, but yeah two time watch is expected from movie lovers.
Fresh!! that's what you will experience after watching it.
Jay - Jaysingh Rathore is a young, dynamic, witty, group leader college boy, whose best friend is Aditi - a cute, aggressive, pretty, sweet girl. Together they two, just two..are so happy that they almost ignore their rest of the group friends - rotlu (who has crush on aditi), bombs(who has crush on jai), shaleen and jiggy(gujju carrycature). They both are best friends, but here comes the punchline of the movie: "when do u know you are in love?"... simple aadikaalin story but wait in totally refreshing Andaaz.
From ahinsagiri of Jai to catfights of Aditi, from direction of Abbas Tyrewala to Casting by Paakhi, from Ratna Pathak - Naseerudin Shah moments to Rajat Kapoor - his wife cameos, from Sohel-Arbaaz's Cowboy horses to Jiggi's Gujarati Tone, from Myau-Rats to "Whats This?" game... every single moment is excellent... ye hai youngistan meri jaan..
And not to forget superb music of ARRehman!!!
About Imran and Genelia, they are splendid. Imran eases himself with the humorous role, he acts good in serious moments too.. Genelia is a treat. All other supports too good. Specially, Nirav Mehta and Pratiek Babbar. We would love to watch Pratiek in bigger roles. After watching Jaane Tu... one will surely wonder why Ratna Pathak is not given chance in other movies too...!
Nothing more to say, just watch it!
Though, i believe, the critics are somewhat overrating the movie by giving four stars (those were given to great movies like Lagaan and Taare Zameen Par)
I will restrict my self to ***

Review: Lovestory 2050

By BT Kida... Hardik Raychanda

Mediocre Lovestory, Excellent 2050.

Handsome, Cool, Riskloving, Superrich Karan falls in love with sweet Shana. In effort to impress his lady love, he races the cycles, chases the buses, chases from firanges and what not. A cute but idiotic butterfly helps him find his lady love and they live happily ever after. Really? No...!

Shana dies in an road accident on the day having a great time with Karan's uncle in his laboratory where the time machine project is secretly on. Karan with the help of his uncle travels in 2050, Mumbai, as Shana has desired to go there. And here comes the interval...

In the world of flying cars, gizmos, robots and high storey buildings, Karan finds reincarnation of Shana as Zaiesha - a supremely popular popsinger. He tries to woo her again with the help of his gr8 love. (which i feel was not at all great but too much melodramatic). And meanwhile comes the masked villain Dr. Hoshi and blah blah.

I went in the movie with zero expectations as my younger brother watched it yesterday and told me its a crap movie. It may have helped me a lot to like the film a little bit.
I Accept, it is not a good film but i appreciate hardwork from Harry and Harman. The movie goes mediocre as Harry falls short in emotional scenes, he still lives in the era of Dilwale, where melodramic love was cheered by the mass. Audience has grown now and loves 'Jaane Tu..' kinda love these days. But Harry has taken a big risk out of his capabilities. On other part, Harman excels in Dancing and Styling. His performance in Cycle Race or Car Chase or the scene where he saves himself from Firanges is at par. But he fails in expressions. He seriously needs to workout on his acting skills. Moreover, he immitates Hrithik and Shahrukh lots of a time. His voice, his dialogue delievery is too much similar to Hrithik, and unfortunately the Hrithik of Mujshe Dosti Karoge and Yaadein, not of Jodha Akbar or Dhoom:2.
So, Ranbir, Niel or Immran has nothing to worry about. You have no competition of Harmann yet. But when, Aashutosh Gowarikar and Sanjay Leela Bhansali are signing Harman, they will enrich his performance and will get the best out of him. So be prepared...

Priyanka does well, and thank fully doesnt ham like Salam-e-Ishq. She looks a little bit weird in 2nd half, especially in the introductory song. But looks gorgeous some times especially in the first half. Boman overacts sometimes, but is good. Children are promoted in promos and posters but have no contribution in film. Archana is strictly okay as usual.

Length of the film is again a negative effect. More and more editing can be done. For those who didnt know that 2050 is only in second half, it's a shock. Audience wanted to see more of 2050.
One thing we MUST appreciate is topnotch SFX. Special effects in the movie, is outstanding. Except few scenes, SFX is matching international standards.

Cinematography (vijay arora) and Sets (omung kumar) are excellent. Especially, Shell Island, Gateway of India Area, Dr. Hoshi's Building, Priyanka's house and Studio is visual treat to eyes. Music (anu mallik) is disappointing.

On the whole, an okay film with lods of amateurish and loud emotions but with untried script and concept (for bollywood only) makes one time watch for film lovers. Those who just spend time watching good movies only, can stay away.

BT Kida's Rating: **
(I dont understand why critics are giving only 1 star, as only VFX deserves 1.5 stars)

Review: Thoda Pyar Thoda Magic

By BT Kida... (Hardik Raychanda)
Are you not a kid??? No? Stay away and spend money on good food either...
Yes, its a kid's flick and i am not sure whether kids will like it or not..
Its about a rich business tycoon who ,due to his pitiful childhood, is now a rude person. On the evening when he gets the businessman of the year award, he by mistake hits a car, which results death of a married couple, parents of our child protagonists - vasishta, anjali, anamika and iqbal, who by order of court stays now with the business tycoon with discomfirt. To dismental this discomfirt God orders his favourite Angel to their home as nanny who creates Thoda Pyar Thoda Magic in their life. As expected the business tycoon and the children now live happily and he falls in the love with the angel and blah blah blah...
First of all, in my opinion, God has no time to send Angels for such problems which would be solved automatically as time passes. If God was so kind, he would have sent an angel to prevent me watching the movie.
Its not like that young people dont like children's movies. The greatest example can be Harry Potter series. Its a false script that fails.. and if it is a children's movie, why is Lazy Lamhe song included??? The whole movie is Lazy and Pathetic.
Saif tries too hard and plays his part well. Rani never looks like an angel in the movie, she is rather boring. Child artists play their parts well, especially guy in the role of Iqbal.
Shankar Eshan Loy's music is strictly okay this time, excluding Sidhi Sapat Zindagi..
Kunal Kohli fails in all the dimensions (he just excelled in Hum Tum only, Mujhse Dosti Karoge and Fanaa was also pathetic) from Rainbow Cycling to Museum Dancing to White Suited God (courtesey Bruce Almighty) to Paristan Scenes... Mr. Kohli has just wasted his and our's time.

Review: Woodstock Villa

Review 1.

by BT Kida...(Hardik Raychanda)

Do you love Hardcore Thrillers? If the answer is yes, go.. watch Woodstock Villa.
Yes, this Sanjay Gupta movie has substance too, with great styling.
A kidnapper who calls the man whose wife has been kidnapped and starts the conversation with a joke...!! Cool attitude, Right?. Yes, that's how the movie starts...
Upto Interval the cool combination of fast paced story, nice camera work, cleverly shot scenes, stylish execution, some thrilling moments, impact of dialogues, perfect acting by lead actors, nice screenplay, cool music and handsome background music holds you tight in your chair. And here comes the interval.... Yes the length of the film is too short (45 minutes) in the preinterval portion.
Post intermission, the screenplay starts loosing its pace. Some twists have no shock value at all and are too much predictable. And mainly songs are the culprit for the second half portions. "Dhokha", "Yeh Pyar Hai" interrupts the storyline. Accept, they are part of the storey but the songs could be trimmed to 1min song as it was done in Dus Kahaaniya.
Most missing element is the impact of the ending. Though, ending is very good but the impact is missing. The main plot on which storey reveals, zara and reshma track, is also not much good.
About performance, Sikander steals the show. The movie is the best preference for a newcomer like him to make a debut. The rough look and strong screen presence empowers his acting skills. He is a new comer to look out for. Though, BT Kida suspects about his suitability for romantic flicks.
Neha Uberoi adds spice to the thriller. She enacts her part with utmost comfort. She looks gorgeous and acts fantastic. Arbaaz Khan is okay. Sachin Khedekar cant play the cool cop, overplays a lot. Dayashankar Pandey, Gaurav Gera, Shakti Kapoor(!!!) are wasted. Gulshan Grover adds chilling presence as Kalimbhai.
Milap Zaveri must be mentioned for Dialogues. Music of Annu Mallik will be restricted to Clubs and DJs for months. Cinematography and Camera work is Excellent!!!
In Short, Hansal Mehta has given the Hollywood touch to a Desi Film. Bollywood Lovers will like the movie, family audience (Vivah Lovers) can stay away.

Though on the box office, it will be having less to offer to mr. distributer.
BT Kida's Comments: Abe kya Dhaanshu acting kiyela hai Sikander bhai ne. Baap ka naam, Hrithik ki tarah Roshan karega.. Ha wo 1.5 crore ke Bike Entry vaali baat kuch hazam nahi hui, 1.5 lakh hote to alag baat hoti. Aur ek baat sochne jaisi hai, ke Police ek scene me Arbaaz se Photo dikha ke puchhta hai ke "Aapki biwi ko acting ka shaukh tha?" uski jaga, journalist banke aane wala sikander vohi baat puchhta to uska effect kuchh aur hi hota.. baaki to Chhota Muh aur Badi Baat...
BT Kida's Movie Rating: **1/2

Review II

By Leo... (Saumil Mehta)

You might have watched "Dus Kahaniyaan" which was the last White Feather Films Production. If you take out all the songs and dance from "Woodstock Villa", it could have been titled "Gyarahvi Kahani - the 11th story...". White Feather Films has been considered as a prominent and lavish production house in the country. They pack style and glamour to give the viewer a definite larger than life images. That was the case in "Kaante", "Plan" and et al. The same continues in "Woodstock Villa". But alas, the pace of the movie tests your patience to the hilt.Lets get the plusses of the movie - to start with, the movie has a good story line and screenplay (Sanjay Gupta, Rajiv Gopal, S. Farhan) is flawless. The production values are top - notch. To be honest, the movie gives you an experience even better than many Hollywood Flicks that we see these days. Director Hansal Mehta has handled the subject beautifully. Post "Chhal" (Kay Kay Menon's major movie in his earlier days - Year 2002), this is Hansal's finest work. Also, it proves Hansal's capability to get the best out of rookies, newcomers like Sikander and Neha. Cinematography (Vikas Nowlakha) is top - notch. But, the production house - White Feather Films are just repeating golden hues in every movie. Nothing wrong with that - but, time for a change Mr. Gupta!!! Amar Mohile is becoming the numero uno background score director. Although Milap Zaveri is most of the times associated with comic flicks, his dialogues in such a thriller are worth applause. But the major sore point that actually over-shadows such a superb movie watching experience is - the songs and dance. Gone are the days when songs and dances were the quintessential part of Hindi Movies. Woodstock Villa would have been one of the best movies of 2008 had the songs and dances been removed. In fact, if one edits all the songs and dances, the length of the movie would get reduced to even less than an hour (Hence, could have got fitted with "Dus Kahaniyaan" and become the "Gyarahvi Kahani")One fine day, a successful businessman's (Arbaaz Khan) wife (Neha Uberoi) gets kidnapped by Sameer (Sikander). He demands hefty ransom from the businessman. But, suddenly things go awry as the wife gets murdered. Sikander tries to leave the city but he sees the wife once again. He decides to hunt for the truth and the mystery gets deepen. The plot takes ample twists and turns and moves in a serpentine fashion to keep the viewer guessing. Although a few twists are predictable, but by and large, the proceedings are quite interesting. But as has been stated earlier, the moment one twist occurs, a song props from somewhere. This actually dilutes the impact of the twist that the story had just taken. Lets face the reality - a thriller works only if the viewer is presented with one after the other twists continuously without any breaks in between. But Alas!!!!To talk about the debutantes - Sikander acts well, but going by the looks, he will have to be careful about the role he chooses for himself. The character has various layers and Sikander peels each layer with aplomb. Definitely an actor of tomorrow...Neha is an eye-candy - extremely sexy and glamorous. But, most importantly, she acts well. Way to go Neha!!!Others (Arbaaz, Sachin Khedekar, Shakti Kapoor) are just there. None of them register any impact whatsoever. To sum up, Woodstock Villa has most of the ingredients that a thriller must have. It has a reasonable chance in cities, esp. at multiplexes. The producers should have avoided its release with the climax of IPL. Hence, it will have a fairly average chance at the box office...Rating: **1/2
